Canadian foursome BadBadNotGood are jazz school geeks living the dream: cranking out moody, post-bop textures on collabs with Odd Future, Earl Sweatshirt, and Frank Ocean. Their jazz-noir-meets-spaghetti-western backing to Ghostface Killah’s 2015 album Sour Soul was a prime example of BBNG delivering what many modern hip-hop artists are seeking: Grainy retro feel married to dazzling live band instrumentation.
BBNG’s fourth proper album—creatively titled IV—is due July 8th. “In Your Eyes” provides the preview: dreamy organ and strings roll out a red carpet for the soul-heavy vocals of fellow Canuck Charlotte Day Wilson. Wilson locks in with the bass line and turns the tune into a gorgeous exercise in understated funk.
