I think it’s pretty well established that I love mac and cheese. I’m confident I could eat it everyday and not get tired of it. So I love exploring new places and am so happy to have tried the lobster mac and cheese at Lobster Joint in Greenpoint.
I look for several things when ordering mac and cheese. First of course, is the cheese. The ratio of cheese to pasta has to be perfect. There are few things worse than dry mac and cheese noodles. The cheese has to be strong but not too overpowering. The next thing that’s pretty important is that it’s well done. I don’t like burnt mac and cheese, but I always look for a good crust. Breadcrumbs certainly help. The inside, the bechamel part, should be gooey and hot. I think for me, the last thing I look for is toppings because I’m a minimalist when it comes to mac and cheese since it’s a heavy dish to start with. But Lobster Joint totally nailed it when it came to the lobster.
Let’s talk about the lobster for a minute. There were a decent amount of large bits of lobster in this dish, but not too overpowering, which I really appreciated because I do always want mac and cheese first and whatever toppings second. But I was so pleasantly surprised that the pieces were so large. I hate getting skimped on when ordering any kind of lobster dish. Often times I’m disappointed. But not here.

The portion size was perfect for two people to share, which was another plus in my book because if I were to order if myself again, I would have a meal for the next day. And mac and cheese the next day is usually just as good.
The vibe is perfectly Greenpoint: casual, inexpensive (comparatively) and welcoming. All in all, it was a great experience and I cannot wait to go back.
