You can sometimes catch glimpses of hip-hop’s influence on indie rock…in the vocal syncopation, the way the drums knock a bit harder then expected, the current trend of looping and sampling. It makes sense; many young musicians grew up in a time where of hip-hop music was omnipresent from pop to underground music stations. It was the soundtrack to their youth and it’s hard to shake those influences off even if you’re playing an acoustic guitar. Purity Ring wears this influence on their sleeves; their production loves that crisp sharp trap snare and face melting bass lines. It’s the reason why you’ve seen their work creep out of their genre into songs by Danny Brown; they know their beats. From their latest album, Another Eternity, they share a clip for their single, “Begin Again” through Apple Music. You can watch it above.
